  • “Dance is my passport and because of dance, I am alive”

AhmadJoudeh1 AMSTERDAM: Maggie Foyer meets the Palestinian dancer Ahmad Joudeh, now resident in Amsterdam.Few dancers at the beginning of their professional career have been as fêted as Ahmad Joudeh, the Syrian-born, Palestinian dancer. When we met in Amsterdam at the Muziektheater, home of Dutch National Ballet, he had just returned from Paris and a dinner date with President Macron.Conversely, few dancers have had as traumatic and dangerous a path to reach professional status. Born in 1990 in the Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus, he was on the frontline as the Syrian civil war raged around him.

  • The steps keep flowing with confident dancers

JohnCrankoSchool1 STUTTGART: There may have been none of John Cranko’s choreography on the programme for the gala by the school that bears his name, but it was an evening that certainly reflected Stuttgart Ballet’s mix of contemporary and classical dance.Former John Cranko School student and Stuttgart Ballet dancer Uwe Scholz, sadly lost early to dance in 2004 when he died following a tragic illness, was always a most musical choreographer, and in Air! , created in 1982, he reproduces the structure of Bach’s Orchestral Suit No.3 in dance for six couples dressed in carefully matched costumes in vanilla, light chocolate and rust.

  • The Royal Ballet School have an excellent record in graduate employment

RBS Holland park juni 2018 LONDON: Holland Park Theatre in South West London is not a regular venue for ballet. It backs onto the remains of Blitz-damaged Holland House and has a semi-enclosed tented auditorium but on this warm summer evening in late June it was magic and the young dancers, mainly senior Royal Ballet School students, were pretty wonderful too.Ashley Page’s Larina Waltz , classical in style and inspired by Tchaikovsky’s infectious music was perfectly pitched as the opening number. The movement was light, free and fluid and the dancers breezed through it in ¾ time, delighted to display their talents to a very appreciative audience of predominantly proud parents.

  • Neumeier’s Nijinsky Galas are a note of high celebration

Songfest,  Carsten Jung and Ivan Urban HAMBURG: John Neumeier’s Nijinsky Gala 2018 was a mix of of history and innovation which is much the tenor of the Neumeier Foundation: a careful curation of dance history while keeping the art form fresh and in the moment. It was innovation to the fore with the State Youth Company, Bundesjugendballett, who presented the aptly titled John’s Dream – And What We Call Growing Up . Despite the fierce competition from star names and choreographies this work was one of the most memorable and unusual works of the evening.
